This isn't gonna be easy!

First let me know say. Great job hokies last night. Watching the team kill maryland on the national spotlight last night was huge! Glennon, who is normally just awful, was fantastic. He got sacked far more than he should have but overall made no mistakes, and let our running game KILL maryland. 253 yards from a running back is goddamn impressive too. Now to just keep it up and rough up miami on the road in a week.

Now onto some poker chat. Well I played yesterday and realized this isn’t gonna be as easy as i thought. 6-max is a serious adjustment, and I’m just beginning to get use to alot of the ideas like 99 being a good call against an allin 5-bet against a lag. I am running a 19/17 which is likely good stats for getting completely run over at 6-max. I will try to get it to something more like 22/18, which i think is optimal. I find myself doing alot of questioning, so i’m really glad i do have a coach. I keep hitting spots where i’m not sure if i’m truly making the most +EV decision, or even making an +EV decision in the first place. I am so use to full ring and knowing the ins and outs of it, that I really am leaving my comfort zone. I am going to stick with it for better or for worse. Its really actually alot more challenging and therefore I have a much bigger drive to do it.

I also have come to realize that I didn’t do enough research on my segway. The reason i got my segway for such a good deal is simply because the batteries are 4 years old and are NiMH. This, of course, meant nothing to me when i bought it. I have since learned there is a new segway battery technology called ‘lithium ion’. The positive of the new technology is that you get 24 miles to a charge. Wow. 24 miles… that’s sick. The negative… $800/battery and you need two. Well fuck. I managed to talk to my local segway dealer, which turns out i’m just lucky to even have one of those, as there aren’t many. I can get 2 ’slightly used’ upgrade batteries for $900. I’m gonna take it so i can stop worrying about my segway running out of battery. My current batteries can’t take the segway more than 3 miles, which really turns into a scary proposition when you are trying to ride home on it. Alas, i will dump more money into this new toy.

This leads me to my last point of the blog today. I will be putting more money away into savings, and stop the elaborate spending. I tend to just love getting a new toy every month, and its turned into a habit for me. Its a terrible habit. Just because i have the money doesn’t mean i should spend it. I have decided to act like i’m poor and can’t afford fun toys. I will have no more ridiculous toys for awhile. I am done dropping a few G’s on impulse buys. Lets see if we can make my bank account go wayyyyyy up. Poor Ringer, from now on. Dont’ think, however, that will stop me from dumping 1k on a table on a regular basis. I am still well rolled for all the poker i wish to play.

On a final note,

I feel like six max isnt that huge of an adjustment preflop, within a few weeks you can get a solid pre game. Btw I think 22/18 is even a bit tighter than optimal, thats akin to a 13/10 in FR, I think when you get experienced enough a 28/22 or such is a good sLAG style.
Despite my ability to transition to a six max preflop game, like you said there are many postflop situations where I am really unsure of the correct play, my equity scenarios, or a clearly defined range for opponent. I tend to go with ‘gut’ in these situations, or err on the side of caution, I think only tons of hours playing six max and tinkering with pokerstove will make these situations standard.

I was a 6m only player prior to moving to fr. I played as a 19/15 the majority of my time there. One month I tried a 30/25. It was very good but swongy to say the least. However my winrate rose from ~3ptbb to ~4 over a small sample. I settled in as a 25/20 and think it was close to optimal for 1/2 and 2/4 at the time. Over a medium sample I was running over 5ptbb. Granted, I couldn’t play more than 6 or 8 at a time.

Most important thing is going to be table selection/seat selection and adjusting at each individual table for some radically different conditions. For example, if you have a habitual squeezer in the blinds, you start flatting opens/4b. If the blinds are nitty, you can get away with calling on the button a lot more… Little stuff like that.
