Bye Bye November, Hello Run-Good-December

First let me say, I’m not Dino21Might. The original from FTP is absolutely not me. I did however steal his name on cake, so anyone who plays both sites would think i am horrible, and therefore i could do some sicko plays. I will be changing back to NityByNature in my next name change though, and likely leaving it there for awhile. That out of the way lets blog on…

November is gone. I turned a pretty nice profit in November despite running like complete shit. I still made $5.5k + 1.5k rakeback. Overall, not a terrible month but i put in so much volume i was expecting to take home a little more coin. Its a winning month though, so i’m not complaining. The reason i even managed to make that much was running like god at 400nl that cancelled out general awfulness across the 200nl board. Oh well… now cue the beginning of december.

And December first looks like I finally am running good. I played a monster session last night, which is something I’m definitely going to focus more on. I played over 3k hands in one sitting while 10 tabling. If you’ve been following the blog recently, i haven’t been able to break off a winning day like this one in months, and i had a few of them back in april and may. It was a much needed boost. When the smoked had cleared, I made 12.5 buyins in that time. I was getting handed money left and right, as well as running good. Honestly however, playing 3k hands gave me a pretty big headache, so if you guys have any tips for playing marathon sessions and still thinking 100% let me know. I know townsend and those guys use to pull like 48 hour sessions. How that is even possible, blows my mind. Here’s the graph from last night…

Now i will put my goals for December

[ ] Run Over 3ptbb/100 over the whole month at 200nl
[ ] Play 60,000 hands
[ ] Bring my Cake Roll up close to $15,000
[ ] Get one new student to coach, hopefully a long term student from lower stakes
[ ] Iron Iron Man
[ ] Drink less alcohol, likely by taking certain fridays and saturdays off to work

Holiday Hustle

Whoa, its been a jam packed week of running around. I am still currently in Maryland at my parent’s house. I am planning to go home on tuesday now, as my girlfriend demands I spend another day with her. What’s with that huh? Girlfriends wanting you to spend time with them when you are close, weird. Oh well, I will be spending the day tomorrow with her, and then heading back to Charlotte the following morning. I really hate the drive. Its 7 and a half hours and dreadful. I do have satellite radio though which tends to help as i can listen to all sorts of awesome talk radio, and good music.

I booked a flight out to san diego for the weekend of my birthday, so that should be awesome. I’ve never been to california and it should be awesome in decemeber. That my first of many exciting trips now that i have free time and lots of money. I also am starting to think about the vegas trip in the summer. I’m planning with vizer and hopefully 2 other pros to get a house in vegas for like 2 months and just live the fucking dream… we’ll see how that goes in the planning process. If you want to join us full ring nits on an awesome time, let me know some time soon (obviously you’ve got a little time)

I have been considering my options with my father today. We have discussed a few different scenarios for online poker profession. He had a few really interesting points which included my taxes and stuff like that. I also have began putting together the end of my month and planning a new year of poker. This year has been a wild one. I started in january playing 100nl and wanting to get to 400nl by the end of the year. I ran hot and hit 400nl by April. I managed to play 400nl and 600nl for 4 months and then hit a tough spot, and still haven’t fully gotten my confidence back. That aside however, I could have never told you at the beginning of this year that i would be a professional poker player come December. Then again I never would have thought I’d get fired. Pretty ridiculous all together.

I want to set goals for 2009. I’m not exactly sure what goals i would like to set yet. But they will likely be lofty. I know one will be to make at least 100k in 2009 from poker. I’ll have to think about the others and get back to the blog about it.

I am excited to get back to Charlotte and start my December right. I am going to try to cut out drinking as much this month and focus on my game. I will try to play close to 60k hands. I’ll post about all my goals coming up in the next blog post. Until then everyone have a good one and i’ll pull one out of splitsuit’s book and leave you guys with a hand:

Happy ThanksGiving Guys!

I have been at home since monday and have been having a great time with family and my girlfriend. I have managed to get in alot of poker. I managed to play around 5k hands since monday which is pretty good all things considered with traveling and family and the likes.

I have managed to be about break even at 200nl but there’s been some just awful beats i’ve taken, which seem to be continuing but tis variance. Here’s a few hands from my last session. The biggest losers i had (also you might notice my name is different):

I run goot. Seriously though, I’m not discouraged. I feel like i’m playing the best poker of my life at the moment. I keep making solid players, and punishing the donks. They situations will likely come full circle.

I am soon traveling to my aunt and uncles house, to have the first of 2 thanksgivings. I am really looking forward to my parents thanksgiving tomorrow. My mom makes the best food and its always a ton of fun because my family is so utterly ridiculous. We just joke about the most ridiculous stuff and don’t take the holiday or family stuff too seriously. That’s the best.

I should be making the trip back to charlotte on monday. I decided no reason to rough the holiday traffic if i don’t have to. I am going to go out with my friends from DC on saturday, and friday will be my night for my friends from home. Overall, a very relaxing trip and I truly enjoy being at home with my parents. Its such a great environment for a week.

On the poker month front, I am looking at around a 5k poker month this month. With all the bad beats, I think i could easily hit 8 if i run hot for the last few days, but I haven’t been able to flip the doomswitch up this month, I have just grinded out solid cards. On the brightside, I have already made more than I would have at my previous job this month, and i’ve worked far less than half the hours. I still feel like i should be doing better though, so i’m going to shoot for a better win rate of around 4bb/100 over 40k hands in december. That’d be super. Later guys.

I can’t say enough good things about running 45ptbb/100

As the title might indicate, this post will be heavily laced with online poker talk, so alas if you are waiting for a life update on Mr. Ringer, you will have to wait for another post.

While this title might seem a little misleading, it totally is. I have run however, over 1000 hands at 400nl at 45ptbb/100. That’s a damn good feeling. I’ve had guys just spewing money to me, as well as getting into a few nice situations. Its a nice little 1000 hands i’ll tell you what, and i’ve already made my month’s salary in those 1000 hands. No big deal haha.

I’ve also been running far below expection at 200nl. I have just hit a few really gross spots recently. I will take the time to post a few of these hands. I have played over 20k hands in the last week, which has been great. I have pretty much enjoyed it all, minus the shitty coolers and beats…

Oh Come on after a min-3b pre- you show up with this? wtf.

This was the last hand of a shitty-ass session. I actually should really find a fold pre- since my villian’s ranges completely dominate my QKs. I tiltingly call as there’s big pot possibilities and the 3b is too small, and i get myself into trouble on the flop. I also learn something fun about my friend imawhale here.

Anyways, Hope you guys have a good one. I’m still grinding my face off over here, trying to get rich. Also i’d like to note i was reading some old school posts on FTP 200nl game with Narena running a disgusting 10bb/100 over 150k hands. I wish that game was still that easy. I would be a rich man. Later Guys.

Offically one week

Its been officially one week since i’ve gone professional and its really been a great time. I spoke with my father today about my intentions and he was for me giving it a go in the short term. He understands that poker is something that I love, so I doubt he would have the heart to tell me not to do it for a living or at least give it a go. I might be making some fatal error here, but I doubt it. Dropping out of college would have been a fatal error. Quitting a perfect job would have been a fatal error. But the stars have kinda lined up to give me a shot at it. Alright, so there seems to be a paragraph like this in every new post I put up recently. Its exciting for me though. Bear with me, while I voice my excitement in words on this blog.

I managed to clear my free cardrunners and free stoxpoker memberships this week. So today, I watched my first stoxpoker video. It might actually be my last too. It was a Supreme20 video on full ring. It was a complete clusterfuck. He was ranting about completely ridiculous topics, many of which ended with ‘and that’s poker in a nutshell’. I don’t really mean to hate on the dude or the site but i was sincerely unimpressed. Also his hud was everywhere, and i couldn’t even see information on some of the players, like stack size. I might have just gotten a bad video though. I will watch another video at some point, likely one from ‘SplitSuit’. So Splitsuit I hope you made a quality video cause i wouldn’t wanna have to bad mouth you in front of all 400 people that read this blog. Ok maybe not 400, maybe more like 4. Either way, gross video. But i digress.

I made $2k this weekend, which was a good feeling, but i really ran like complete shit. I was up 3.5bb/100 but I was getting sucked out in places that were just horrible… for example this whopper came up. This is against a 33/22 player at full ring… so wtf… http://www.pokerhand.org/?3460946.

Seriously, That’s definitely the worst thing that happened to me, but I had two other terrible players turn miracle sets after making bad flops calls while i had AA. So I feel like i should have ran about another +1k this weekend after all the bad beats i took. But I have never played 5k hands in 2 days, so maybe i have to get use to this idea that I will take several seriously bad beats a session. I held up pretty well and made a few nice laydowns which included 2 instances of QQ pre- against nits, but before i got coached back to my sane game, i would have shoved. I also sadly enough won’t have an overall graph from this month. I had to make a new database as me old one was causing my PT3 to lag while i played thus causing me to tilt. Here’s the new database from this weekend’s graph.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

You can see some serious spikage in there, from time to time, but overall a solid winning set of sessions. Its a good feeling, and i’m getting really glad that I paid to get coached before I got the kibosh at work. I will be trying to put in 2k hands a day for the rest of the month at least. I am feeling really confident about my game again, and it shows.

I am planning to go stay with one of my good poker friends, ragingquads_ when i get home for thanksgiving. I will play a few sessions with him and hopefully he will have some stuff to say to me. I have to show him PT3 so that’s the trade off i suppose. He makes a killing and doesn’t even use the program, and 4 tables. He’s a sick individual. I’m also planning to do a decent amount of travelling and have been talking to vizer about possibly doing a trip somewhere sweet, like Aruba. When you have no job, you really have no reason to not travel. I also need to take my gf somewhere on a trip as she seems awfully antsy about seeing me, and apparently wants to spend time with me. Stupid girls.

Anyways, that’s really all i have. And this really removed my tilt from the end of the last session, so perhaps i shall play more.

First week update

I’ve been pro for the last 4 days and to tell ya the truth i’ve held the schedule, without any real problems. I seem to have the habit of not being able to sleep past 9am. I hope that changes soon because, I’m getting tired of waking up so damn early.

My first week of poker has been very poor. I have played great but gotten sucked out on in several large pots. Its a little frustrating but i’ve still made around $1500 since going pro. I have played 8000 hands in 4 days averaging around 2k a day. I think that’s definitely sustainable as I really feel like i’m slacking when I play that few hands a day. That’s basically only 2 sessions. I also have started looking into my own benefits and it really isn’t gonna be nearly as expensive as i thought it was going to be. I shouldn’t have a problem getting myself covered as i’m 24 and don’t smoke.

I finally had the second session with my coach. It was a video session and for some reason my desktop hates working with desktop sharing software so I used my laptop and that’s definitely going to be my new lessons computer. It runs flawlessly. The session went great and danibusman found a few leaks, but I don’t know that it’s his actual coaching that is helping me. He’s given me several pieces of advice and really helped me get my head back on straight. I seemed to have forgotten the Brian Townsend Matra: Don’t get fancy, just play good solid poker. I had been playing good solid poker for a year and a half as I climbed the ranks, but when i finally got comfortable with my bankroll online and i was so overrolled for $400 buyin games, I started to overthink everything and not let the hands play themselves. I am now slowing back down and not trying to be an overaggressive player that I was being for the last 2 months.

With all this in mind, I will likely move back to the 400nl games when my sessions with Danibusman are completed. I think I am back mentally where i was in April when I was pumping out 10k months no problem. I think the games are tougher though, since i was last there. Hopefully that doesn’t hurt me as much as it could. I still think i’m better than the majority, with the exception of Deeznut105 (that kid is solid).

On the topic of my desktop, I think i’m going to be getting a new one soon. I have just found that it simply will not run as efficiently as i need my poker machine to run. I tilt when the hud causes my computer to lag. The $1000 on a new computer, will easily pay for itself. I will wait another month i think to do that though. I want to see exactly what income I can expect from playing cards for a living. I think it will be somewhere in the tune of 8k/month which would be a decent starting point. I think i can turn this month into a 5k after the horrendous start and if that’s the case, i will buy the new computer.

I just got an Iphone. Iphones are the nuts. I got it for a discounted price from a friend, so I know i said no more stupid spending. Well, screw it this was too good of a deal to pass up. Either way, I hope you 200nl regs are ready for how bad the games become when i’m playing 5 hours a day. Peace ya’ll.

Living the Dream… so far.

I believe I have gotten a entirely new set of readers. This is due to my facebook being linked to this feed, so when i update the blog, it adds a note on my facebook. Also, I think I’ve got the readership of a lot of my previous office. Mostly because they really wanna see if I can do this. I encourage all of you new readers and i think will start catering to people who don’t necessarily care bout the little things of poker. Let me just say to all my old co-workers, better me than you. Hopefully that was the last cut. To facebook readers, welcome to the dream.

I have officially been a professional poker player for 2 days. I have to say I’ve had a great time. That of course comes with the help of running well. I’ve almost managed to turn around the beginning of my awful month. I have put in close to 5k hands in the process too. I know there are going to be alot of tough times ahead, and i don’t think I want to be a professional for more than 2 years, but I would love to just sit back and see how far I can go. I will continue to pursue my career but I don’t think I want to do it until the economy bounces back.

I know professional poker is a ridiculous bitch as pointed out by vinny and tiltbad, but I am currently enjoying it and will likely enjoy it for a few more months. I just hope i don’t run bad and kill all my mental momentum. I also will get to put in far more hands than previously so hopefully that lowers variance, but i am aware that I will run worse than I thought could ever be possible at some point in my career just hopefully not in the next few months.

I had a session with my coach today. It was a complete clusterfuck. I can’t seem to get my mikogo to function properly. Everything just wasn’t working and the video i recorded was garbage. It just didn’t work out today, but he was a good sport and said we could just reschedule after i wasted 30 minutes of his time trying to get all the shit to work. That’s something I’d do for a student, so I’m glad my coach is the same way. You what they say, even tiger woods has a coach (and i’m the tiger woods of poker).

omorrow, I shall be filing for unemployment benefits, as i have no job. I will also be hitting up my new schedule. My planned schedule goes as such:

10am: Wake up

10-12: Play a session

12-1:30: Lunch and Gym

1:30-3: Chill out

3-6: Play a session

6-X: Depends on the day. I will either go out with friends, or play another session and relax. My evenings i’m going to leave open.

I think i’ve got a pretty sweet life now, don’t i? Lets hope i can run well for at least a little while.

The Big Ax!

Well the inevitable happened. I have been released from my engineering profession. Surpringly I feel great! I have been flirting with the idea of going professional for awhile now. I still have a pretty massive BR although this month certainly isn’t helping things.

So I have decided that I won’t work again until I absolutely have to. I will buy my own benefits at the beginning of the year and live the professional players dream. I know a ton of you guys are full time pros so any serious tips will be greatly appreciated. I will have to actually follow through with my resolution to not spend so much money. I will likely try to live off of 3k a month.

I seriously am so excited. Its the weirdest thing. No more waking up. I make my own hours, and will get stressed at my own risk. I was actually even secretly hoping i was going to go this cut, and sure enough my name got called and they told me to go to the partner’s office. They had sad faces and all i could do was think, these guys have no idea I already make more than they do. I was being told that they will do their best to find me a new job and all i could think about was getting home to finally play my first session. I walked out of there head held high. You can’t let little things like this get to you. People are usually really depressed, but its an opportunity to explore things you really wanna do. I loved my job, and there’s a reason i didn’t quit it before now, but the place that i fell in love with when i first got to the work place has turned drab/depressing/and secretive. No opportunities in this economy and it was stressing me out! Now i’ve got nothing to worry about at all. Except maybe money. I have carefully saved over 5 months of salary to live off of i can’t cash money offline. I will try to cash out 3k every month at one day. I’m not sure which day i will chose yet but i will be methodical.

I am now going out to get lunch with one of the other guys who got cut. My friends at the company who definitely needed their job, are still employed so that’s great news. I seriously think this worked out the best. I would certianly be very open to going back to my company if the economy turns around, and i would love to. I will be unemployed waiting for them i guess! Here’s to the best situation for all!

When god hands you lemons, find a new god. I’m playing a game i love.

This isn’t gonna be easy!

First let me know say. Great job hokies last night. Watching the team kill maryland on the national spotlight last night was huge! Glennon, who is normally just awful, was fantastic. He got sacked far more than he should have but overall made no mistakes, and let our running game KILL maryland. 253 yards from a running back is goddamn impressive too. Now to just keep it up and rough up miami on the road in a week.

Now onto some poker chat. Well I played yesterday and realized this isn’t gonna be as easy as i thought. 6-max is a serious adjustment, and I’m just beginning to get use to alot of the ideas like 99 being a good call against an allin 5-bet against a lag. I am running a 19/17 which is likely good stats for getting completely run over at 6-max. I will try to get it to something more like 22/18, which i think is optimal. I find myself doing alot of questioning, so i’m really glad i do have a coach. I keep hitting spots where i’m not sure if i’m truly making the most +EV decision, or even making an +EV decision in the first place. I am so use to full ring and knowing the ins and outs of it, that I really am leaving my comfort zone. I am going to stick with it for better or for worse. Its really actually alot more challenging and therefore I have a much bigger drive to do it.

I also have come to realize that I didn’t do enough research on my segway. The reason i got my segway for such a good deal is simply because the batteries are 4 years old and are NiMH. This, of course, meant nothing to me when i bought it. I have since learned there is a new segway battery technology called ‘lithium ion’. The positive of the new technology is that you get 24 miles to a charge. Wow. 24 miles… that’s sick. The negative… $800/battery and you need two. Well fuck. I managed to talk to my local segway dealer, which turns out i’m just lucky to even have one of those, as there aren’t many. I can get 2 ’slightly used’ upgrade batteries for $900. I’m gonna take it so i can stop worrying about my segway running out of battery. My current batteries can’t take the segway more than 3 miles, which really turns into a scary proposition when you are trying to ride home on it. Alas, i will dump more money into this new toy.

This leads me to my last point of the blog today. I will be putting more money away into savings, and stop the elaborate spending. I tend to just love getting a new toy every month, and its turned into a habit for me. Its a terrible habit. Just because i have the money doesn’t mean i should spend it. I have decided to act like i’m poor and can’t afford fun toys. I will have no more ridiculous toys for awhile. I am done dropping a few G’s on impulse buys. Lets see if we can make my bank account go wayyyyyy up. Poor Ringer, from now on. Dont’ think, however, that will stop me from dumping 1k on a table on a regular basis. I am still well rolled for all the poker i wish to play.

On a final note,

My Strategy

I got my first 6-max coaching session last night. I thought it was quite good. I have two more sessions coming up, and I should know by then if i actually hired the right guy for the job. He did manage to pick up 2 rather large leaks i’ve been doing. Two things that I was doing the entire way up to 400nl but got lost in me ‘being very good at poker’. I was playing far too many hands out of position. This is common sense but I seem to get lost in myself sometimes, and out thinking my own image/opponents.

Either way, I have determined my strategy and what i hope to gain from these lessons. I would really like to be a player who can sit at either 6-max tables or full ring tables and be profitable. Honestly, before this lesson i don’t think i was too profitable at 6-max. I knew it was little things that were keeping me from being truly profitable at 6-max, but just couldn’t put my finger on it. My strategy is to become a top full ring pro, by cutting my teeth on 6-max tables. By taking the skills I learn to beat 6-max players, I think I will become quite profitable against full ring fish. I hope this turns around the break even stretch i’ve been having. I will now be a tag 6-max player for the next 2 weeks and learn the ins and outs of 6-max. Enjoy your break from me at the 200nl FR tables boys.

My job. Well its starting to look like my company is getting slammed. There have been two cuts already and there’s the overwelming feel of a third cut coming. In all honesty, I’d be surprised if I made it through a 3rd cut. This all considering my work is really slowing down. I wouldn’t be too upset, but I would still be sort of offended i think. I think its just the principle of the thing. I like my job, and I like the people i work with, so i would really like neither to go away. But with the economy as is, what can ya do? I’ll just sit back and see where the axes fall, if i happen to catch one, I think i will take a break.

Its not that often that people are given an option to pursue something they have been wanting to try. I will become a professional poker player for a few months, basically until i get tired of it. I will tell my company that if they want me back, just pick up the phone and i will likely not have another job, so i wouldn’t mind coming back on board. The professional poker thing would be fun, and likely not a permanent thing. So i’ll keep you guys posted on how the ax falls at work.

Also, Lets go Hokies tongiht! Beat up a pretty good maryland team at home!
