Bye Bye PokerTracker 3

Welp, I finally hit my last straw with this stupid program. Last night, I found out my pokertracker 3 importer had been re-importing an extra 100 hands each time I imported my files manually. Sure enough, that completely fucked my numbers of late. I went looking for a solution online and instead of finding one I found a cardrunners offer for $45 Holdem Manager (yes that’s right, if you bought it for $80 and are a CR member, you paid about $35 too much… suckers). Seems like destiny right?

I’m so happy with HEM. There are some ridiculous tools on it. Vizer had always told me about what a great program was but I liked the stone age pokertracker 3. Its so smooth and wonderful with its importing. I haven’t even gotten into the hud yet, but i can’t wait. I have already uninstalled pokertracker 3 from my computer and written off the $80 for it as a bad beat. I had faith in pokertracker 2 and thought that pt3 would only get better and what ensued was the loss of their brand.

To Pokertracker, You guys need to do some serious work on your program but you seem complacent. You are getting out worked by holdem manager. This program has turned me successfully and i was a very loyal pokertracker customer. So to this I say bye bye to Pokertracker, and i don’t plan on ever coming back unless Pokertracker 4 is free.

In my real life, I had a great time hanging out with my friends while they had off for their work vacations. I went to a party which I thought could have been semi-awkward if the wrong people showed up. It was a work (well my old work) party. Is it still considered my ‘work’ if i haven’t gotten a new ‘work’ yet? The wrong people didn’t show up and it was a great time. It was the kinda party that i’m inevitably going to attending more often. The ‘30 year old’ party with food and nice beer provided. Its sorta depressing but its actually not that depressing as I’m about ready for the go-out drinking every night of the weekend lifestyle to end. Also, at the party, my lifestyle didn’t come up in a negative way. Basically even people i didn’t know that well, already knew my story or had heard a rumor. Overall it was a good time, and afterwards, i just went home and played poker because i’m that lame on a saturday night.

Onto other things, Me and Vizer have been looking at places in vegas for this summer. By “Me and Vizer”, I mean vizer is looking up places and then sending me links of awesomeness. We are starting to get close to actually putting money down on a place. Vizer has already talked to a few people and we are starting to talk about getting 2 more people who want to spend May 1st til August 30th in vegas in one of the most ridiculous houses ever. I personally can’t wait. I keep seeing these places and want it to be summer right now so that I can go lay by the awesome pool we will inevitably have. If you are pro and want to rock out in vegas with us for the summer, please let me know. My only requirement for a potential roommate is you can’t suck as a human and need to be a pro. I can not wait to be out there living the life.

Pokerwise, I am still running good. I am running at 12ptbb/100 over 5k hands. That begs an interesting question… does holdem manager use ptbb or bb? or is it hembb? AHHHHHHHHH! A whole new world for my poker databasing, I’m pumped. Anyways, I think i’m gonna play a session or maybe i’ll go play call of duty 5 as that seems to be all I can do this month.

2009 - Giving Professional Poker a Real Shot

Alright so my apologies about the blog guys. I have had a really busy last few days and the holidays put me at a strain for time. I barely found enough time to play myself.

Lets get to the december goals before i get going any further about my 2009 hopes and my 2008 realizations. Here’s my goals I wanted to accomplish this past month:

[ x ] Run Over 3ptbb/100 over the whole month at 200nl - I ran over 6ptbb/100 this month (it was a good one for sure)
[   ] Play 60,000 hands - I only got in about 50k… so epic fail here, but I can blame the holidays i guess
[ x ] Bring my Cake Roll up close to $15,000 - Well cleared 15k, my roll on cake is getting close to my roll on ftp. Pretty good considering I only put 2k of my own cash on there.
[ x ] Get one new student to coach, hopefully a long term student from lower stakes - I didn’t coach a student yet, but I do have 3 which I am talking to
[  ] Iron Iron Man - Epic Fail. I gave up on FTP for the month. I broke my 8 months of iron man, and blew my year end bonus. I just needed a break from FTP, and cake let me change my scenary and get out of the mundane rut i’ve found my game in recently.
[ x ] Drink less alcohol, likely by taking certain fridays and saturdays off to work - I took off 3 fridays this month to play poker. It was really good, but I did still go out on thursdays so its really not that impressive.

Overall I’m pretty happy with my month results. I had a solid first full month. I ran amazingly on 1/2 but managed to get wacked for 1700 on 2/4 tables. Mostly just bad spots and playing poorly, I have earned a reputation on the 1/2 tables however as being one of the better regs i feel like. I did this on FTP and then fell into complaceny. I notice the pros and start to overthink everything and give them too much soulreading credit. I am trying to overcome that, and i think doing it with good success so far.

On that note, I think that’s my story from 2008. I started the year playing .5/1 and finally starting to take poker seriously. I managed to run hot and breeze through 1/2nl and take shots at 2/4nl by april. I was full time 2/4nl by the end of april. I killed the games for 3 months having a few 10k months, and then the regs adjusted to me and I didn’t manage to adjust back. I played as high as 3/6 on a regular basis, and am still well rolled for that game. I then ran bad and came back to 200nl. I have stayed at 1/2nl since October. I have been degressing mentally since october. I have a monterous BR for even 2/4 yet I mentally can’t handle losing a buyin. I could handle a 2.2k losing night in april, but now for some reason I can’t. Its just a weird mental progression. Either way, I am still winning and i think that’s what i’m addicted to. I just love the feeling of being one of the best players on a limit. Anyways, I could never have imagined in a million years in january that i would be professional by 2009. I am a professional poker player, its a wild thought. I went to school to be an engineer, and came out doing something completely different, something that I could never have seen myself doing. Obviously, I got a little shove from my old company but i don’t think I could have pulled the trigger myself, so i commend them on doing it for me.

I have decided I will play throughout 2009. I will give one full year to poker and at the end of it, I will decide if i want to do it again or if I want to go back to work. Obviously, there are a few things that will change my mind. If my old company comes back and wants me, i’ll likely go back to work for them at least part-time. The job was so enjoyable, I would absolutely spend my time there again. However, I doubt that’s happening anytime soon if ever. I am on my own and its pretty sweet. I informed my dad of the decision and he supported my decision however told me to find something I have passion for, as my old passion has just become my job. I think I have passion for engineering, so I will continue to look into some sort of part time work in that field or perhaps something to do with computers.

My goal for 2009 is to make 100k.  I hope to be in a completely different place at the end of this year. I hope to be playing 5/10 or 10/20 regularly, but i know I have a ton of progression to do as well as about 100k to pad onto my bankroll before i can play 10/20. It’s a lofty goal, but I really would like to undertake it and perhaps with another pro. I will be in vegas for 3 months with a few pros this summer, so I feel like that will be the time that each of us will build off each other. I know vizer will be one of the guys there, and I know he’s got the same lofty goals i do. I look at the holla-dolla-ballas and see what those guys did, and how they built off each other to be the elite. I would like to do something similar, and truly make the grind something that isn’t so grinding. If i am to make 100k at 1/2nl, that will be volume, volume, volume. I would rather make that at 2/4 or 3/6, which would mean i need to come back to full tilt, which of course has been in the cards all along. Cake is just a fun little stop on the way.

That’s my only real goal for 2009. Be wealthy, and improve my poker game through other pros. Here’s to a great 2009. Good Luck to everyone.

San Diego

I am back from san diego and to be perfectly honestly, there really isn’t anything to blog about. The trip was a blast, but it was basically just really great to reunite with a few of my best friends from school. We went out got shitfaced and did some fun things around san diego, but honestly we were pretty lazy and didn’t do much outside of seeing the city. The town itself is awesome. It was around 70 degrees the whole time we were there and at night dropped to the upper 50’s. So definitely still put on a jacket weather. One thing that is worthy of pointing out in this blog is that one of the bars we went to had Pokertek’s Headsup Poker Challenge. This thing is ridiculous.

It consumed an entire night at the bar of me and my friends challenging each other to the game. We got shitty and played virtual cards at the bar. I know it sounds totally lame, but it was actually surprisingly not as nerdy as it seemed. Ok so we didn’t have any bitches on us, but not like I was trying to have bitches on me anyways. I’m sure if i wanted them there, i could have just fluttered an eye. I ended up getting my bar tab paid for from the game and that’s about it.

I didn’t play a hand of poker other than that drunk stupid game at the bars, which was relaxing. Nothing like taking 3 days off, and not thinking about cards at all. I did however get back into the grind today, and my brain welcomed me back to work. I managed to pick around 8.5 buyins off the tables today, which was excellent. My month is going fantasticly and definitely should be one of my best ever months at 1/2nl if it continues. I have already broken one of my commandments. I will not be making FTP ironman this month. I will be breaking an 8 month streak, but I have my reasons. I am taking a break from FTP for a little while.

I am on course to run well over 3ptbb/100 this month, but I am not on course for the number of hands. I think i have only played around 25k up to this point which would put me on course to only play 50k hands this month. We’ll see if i can grind it out of the holidays to bring up the big number I’m hoping for. My cake roll looks like it is going to have no trouble hitting the milestone i set at the beginning of the month for it, which is very good news as I’m hoping to make it as large as my FTP roll by february 09. I also haven’t found a long term student however I did get an IM today but missed him which I finally saw the message. And finally I have done a pretty good job at taking a weekend day off from drinking. I will be doing so this weekend, and have done so every weekend except while I was in san diego, but that’s vacation. So there’s my goals setup. With only one really failed, that not so bad, and I can definitely live with it.

I also turned 25 this weekend. I am getting old, this sucks.

Whale’s Vagina

I am off to San Diego for the weekend.

Trip Report to follow.

I’m an idiot.

So i’m an idiot. I’ll explain that in a second. First, go to vinnyvt’s blog and watch the 30 minute video he embedded there. Its called I.O.U.S.A and is completely worth your time. If you are reading this on facebook, www.vinnyvt.com. If you are bored at work and don’t have a boss around, I’d recommend using your time wisely and watching.

Ok onto stupid me…

Stupid Ringer

For those that don’t know, Monday Night Football was in charlotte last night. It was fantastic, and we tailgated heavily for it. It was a great time. However, we were tailgating right by my old employer as they are right uptown and have the cheapest lot for the panthers stadium within reasonable distance. We fired up the burgers and fired up all sorts of delcious. Sure enough a couple of my old bosses show up. Both of whom were in the meeting to let me know i was canned. Granted I really like one of the guys, and obviously don’t blame either of them. If i was in there spot, i, without a doubt, would have cut me too (maybe even earlier than they did). This isn’t the stupid part. One of the bosses who is 29, is a man genius, and i would generally call him a friend. I am in a fantasy football league with him, and often times run into him at the bars and am myself around him. He knows that I play poker and do well. I don’t think he knows how well but he knows that i’m capable of making a living and am not an idiot. However, the other member of the ‘firing squad’ (as i shall now refer to them as), is a little less personable, and never took the time to get to know me. Naturally, I’m about 8 beers deep and start talking with the less personable one. He’s asking exactly what i’d expect him to. The following conversation took place:

Boss: How ya holding up, boss? - I’m not sure if he actually called me boss, but it seems to flow
Me: Its going great
Boss: How’s the job hunt coming?

And shit… I don’t have a response. I mean I don’t even know what to say. I could bold-face lie to the guy and say its coming great or slowly or something to the lines of any ideas? But no I’m 8 beers deep, and apparently stupid. I say “Its not, I’m not even looking right now”. Of course he asked why, I say I have other things going in my life. I figure that would be enough, but alas it was not. He starts going off about its not a terrible idea to get into other occupations which now that I think about might be him telling me that i was a shitty engineer, but whatever. I could have just rolled with that, and likely the conversation would have ended. No no, not 8-Beer Ringer. I bust in with “well actually i’m playing poker for a living now”. DOH! I spend the next 5 minutes back-pedalling and making it sound like it was just for making ends meet and i really did want to be an engineer (which i do).

This being my first real experience with dropping this bombshell on someone who doesn’t know me at all. I get a blank face like i just told him “I can see jesus and we need to take our clothes off and go to him”. Whoops. He doesn’t get it. I’m an idiot, and look like a complete degenerate as well as lazy. Stupid me. It also probably doesn’t help for a reference in the future (which hopefully I can still get from cool boss, who i’m pretty sure knows how smart i am)

So my question to you poker pros and normal people is this. How do you say your occupation out loud to unknowns and not getting looked at like you just got caught screwing your neighbors cat? Or is there just no way normal people understand that poker isn’t the same as putting my rent on red?

I figure smart people will understand that another smart person would have a well thought out plan… but maybe everyone just assumes I’m an idiot. So there it is, I’m an idiot.

A None-Poker Post (ok well mostly)

My dumb real life friends apparently like me to update this blog with hilarious shit about my real life and such observations. Usually, I just say ‘Fuck off, its a poker blog’ but with my new found facebook linkage, i suppose more people might be tired of reading numbers, graphs and hearing math spoken. It would remind me of multi-variable calculus too.

So lets talk about hilarious shit and stuff since i’ve become a poker professional and some considerations that I need to take into account. I have been professional for close to a month now, and its been a pretty awesome month, but after a month i realize I need to get some new fucking hobbies. Currently my life consists solely of poker, sleep, trolling forums, the gym, playing call of duty (damn you vizer), and of course, being a rampant alcholic 24 year old. Honestly, it has mostly consisted of poker though, well ok maybe a little more drinking than poker but poker none the less.

I have been trying figure out all my benefits shit i’m gonna need for the coming year. I’ve decided to give it a go for year, and see how I fair as well as how sane I am come next december. Alas, I will need health benefits, as I’m basically the hamburglar with how much I love to fondle cheeseburgers. Ok maybe I don’t fondle them, perhaps I eat them. Come to think of it, I’d prolly be healthier if I was just a cheeseburger molestor, but I digress. I think I’m just gonna roll with a high deductible, and money co-pay. I don’t really know much about it, but I likely will be going through my previous provider, which is NCBCBS, which of course is the short version of No Complications Because Cheese BurgerS… or perhaps north carolina blue cross blue sheild (i thought the first was more clever). That means I will have to get in tip top shape and not do anything stupid that will mess up my health exam like a delicious late drunk night cigarette, don’t get me wrong, i don’t smoke and think its generally repulsive but man are they good when you got 10 beers in you. On a more serious note, if any of you poker friends with your own health care have any pointers please feel free to comment.

I have been managing to stick to a mighty ridiculous poker schedule with playing 5 hour sessions per day being about the normal. This is where the ‘mostly’ in the title will come in but FB readers and bored LDI employees alike I will keep the math, numbers, and graphs outta this one. I have managed to completely botch my schedule, with my average wakeup time now somewhere around 11. Stay with me though people. Its not cause I’m lazy (ok maybe that has something to do with it). Its because the best poker games usually run at night, and on the East Coast that night time is from around 10pm to 3am. Alas, I have to play those times if i like money (I am quite fond (not fondle) of money). So I have a good reason to play these times, and its because I wanna be hella-rich and actually succeed at being a sick nasty pro player. Well actually, I care far more about being hella-rich than respected but if you respect me, that’s cool too.

Onto the completely self-leveling topic, You guys can be my shrink on this one. I mean i guess you don’t really have to, but since you are reading this far, I can only assume you have some extreme desire to help me out, or some hilarious desire to watch me fail (btw, it would be hilarious to watch me fail miserably at this, go broke and come crawling back to corporate america). However, all readers alike i’m sure would love to have the same problem I am about to list: Cronic Back Fatigue. Ok, I might be slightly kidding, but if there’s anyone out there that is say… 6′0″, blonde, female, 115 lbs and into rubbing backs of nude hairy poker professionals, please leave a comment. The problem i am talking about is too much fucking free time. This is the reason I liked having a job in the first place, I liked having something to do, and something to keep me on a schedule. I need a new damn hobby, and i am realizing it quick. I will go insane, if I don’t get something else to do in the next year. I can literally only stomach 5 hours of poker a day before my head starts hurting, and then i need to do something else entirely. I have been thinking about picking guitar up again, and then I remember why the fuck did I quit in the first place? I wasn’t going anywhere with it. Perhaps, I could pick golf up again, but then I realize the times I want to play golf, everyone else is slaving away at work. Well fuck, Its tough to find something to do, while all your friends are getting sodomized by the philosophical man. I mean, I really like hanging out with people all day, but my schedule seems to conflict with their free time.

Then I thought, why not teach AutoCAD? This my friends is brilliant. It takes little time out of my day, I’m incredibly nasty at the program, and it would technically keep me in the analytical, metaphysical, philosophical ‘industry’. I hear the warning from you people, you see that? “Eric, Poker might pay better than your day job, but what if you want to go back to work in 3 years… no one will want your old ass”… yeah i get that exact line like once a week from someone (ok, maybe slightly paraphased). Well ok people I get it. I should definitely protect my resume from having to say in an interview… “well i just said fuck it, I got time, I got money, who needs to work?” I could imagine that would go over like raining, chocolate-covered cinderblocks with a future employer. I shall definitely look into this one.

Alright, That’s really all the time I got for cutting into my prime poker hourage. Wish me luck on my daily adventure, and I hope all you FB’ers and LDI’ers enjoyed a none-math intensive post. You won’t get them often. Welp, See ya.

Bye Bye November, Hello Run-Good-December

First let me say, I’m not Dino21Might. The original from FTP is absolutely not me. I did however steal his name on cake, so anyone who plays both sites would think i am horrible, and therefore i could do some sicko plays. I will be changing back to NityByNature in my next name change though, and likely leaving it there for awhile. That out of the way lets blog on…

November is gone. I turned a pretty nice profit in November despite running like complete shit. I still made $5.5k + 1.5k rakeback. Overall, not a terrible month but i put in so much volume i was expecting to take home a little more coin. Its a winning month though, so i’m not complaining. The reason i even managed to make that much was running like god at 400nl that cancelled out general awfulness across the 200nl board. Oh well… now cue the beginning of december.

And December first looks like I finally am running good. I played a monster session last night, which is something I’m definitely going to focus more on. I played over 3k hands in one sitting while 10 tabling. If you’ve been following the blog recently, i haven’t been able to break off a winning day like this one in months, and i had a few of them back in april and may. It was a much needed boost. When the smoked had cleared, I made 12.5 buyins in that time. I was getting handed money left and right, as well as running good. Honestly however, playing 3k hands gave me a pretty big headache, so if you guys have any tips for playing marathon sessions and still thinking 100% let me know. I know townsend and those guys use to pull like 48 hour sessions. How that is even possible, blows my mind. Here’s the graph from last night…

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Now i will put my goals for December

[ ] Run Over 3ptbb/100 over the whole month at 200nl
[ ] Play 60,000 hands
[ ] Bring my Cake Roll up close to $15,000
[ ] Get one new student to coach, hopefully a long term student from lower stakes
[ ] Iron Iron Man
[ ] Drink less alcohol, likely by taking certain fridays and saturdays off to work

Holiday Hustle

Whoa, its been a jam packed week of running around. I am still currently in Maryland at my parent’s house. I am planning to go home on tuesday now, as my girlfriend demands I spend another day with her. What’s with that huh? Girlfriends wanting you to spend time with them when you are close, weird. Oh well, I will be spending the day tomorrow with her, and then heading back to Charlotte the following morning. I really hate the drive. Its 7 and a half hours and dreadful. I do have satellite radio though which tends to help as i can listen to all sorts of awesome talk radio, and good music.

I booked a flight out to san diego for the weekend of my birthday, so that should be awesome. I’ve never been to california and it should be awesome in decemeber. That my first of many exciting trips now that i have free time and lots of money. I also am starting to think about the vegas trip in the summer. I’m planning with vizer and hopefully 2 other pros to get a house in vegas for like 2 months and just live the fucking dream… we’ll see how that goes in the planning process. If you want to join us full ring nits on an awesome time, let me know some time soon (obviously you’ve got a little time)

I have been considering my options with my father today. We have discussed a few different scenarios for online poker profession. He had a few really interesting points which included my taxes and stuff like that. I also have began putting together the end of my month and planning a new year of poker. This year has been a wild one. I started in january playing 100nl and wanting to get to 400nl by the end of the year. I ran hot and hit 400nl by April. I managed to play 400nl and 600nl for 4 months and then hit a tough spot, and still haven’t fully gotten my confidence back. That aside however, I could have never told you at the beginning of this year that i would be a professional poker player come December. Then again I never would have thought I’d get fired. Pretty ridiculous all together.

I want to set goals for 2009. I’m not exactly sure what goals i would like to set yet. But they will likely be lofty. I know one will be to make at least 100k in 2009 from poker. I’ll have to think about the others and get back to the blog about it.

I am excited to get back to Charlotte and start my December right. I am going to try to cut out drinking as much this month and focus on my game. I will try to play close to 60k hands. I’ll post about all my goals coming up in the next blog post. Until then everyone have a good one and i’ll pull one out of splitsuit’s book and leave you guys with a hand:

Happy ThanksGiving Guys!

I have been at home since monday and have been having a great time with family and my girlfriend. I have managed to get in alot of poker. I managed to play around 5k hands since monday which is pretty good all things considered with traveling and family and the likes.

I have managed to be about break even at 200nl but there’s been some just awful beats i’ve taken, which seem to be continuing but tis variance. Here’s a few hands from my last session. The biggest losers i had (also you might notice my name is different):

I seriously almost checked the river behind here, his line is so strong. However, i decided i still get alot of value out of a ton of his range.

I run goot. Seriously though, I’m not discouraged. I feel like i’m playing the best poker of my life at the moment. I keep making solid players, and punishing the donks. They situations will likely come full circle.

I am soon traveling to my aunt and uncles house, to have the first of 2 thanksgivings. I am really looking forward to my parents thanksgiving tomorrow. My mom makes the best food and its always a ton of fun because my family is so utterly ridiculous. We just joke about the most ridiculous stuff and don’t take the holiday or family stuff too seriously. That’s the best.

I should be making the trip back to charlotte on monday. I decided no reason to rough the holiday traffic if i don’t have to. I am going to go out with my friends from DC on saturday, and friday will be my night for my friends from home. Overall, a very relaxing trip and I truly enjoy being at home with my parents. Its such a great environment for a week.

On the poker month front, I am looking at around a 5k poker month this month. With all the bad beats, I think i could easily hit 8 if i run hot for the last few days, but I haven’t been able to flip the doomswitch up this month, I have just grinded out solid cards. On the brightside, I have already made more than I would have at my previous job this month, and i’ve worked far less than half the hours. I still feel like i should be doing better though, so i’m going to shoot for a better win rate of around 4bb/100 over 40k hands in december. That’d be super. Later guys.

I can’t say enough good things about running 45ptbb/100

As the title might indicate, this post will be heavily laced with online poker talk, so alas if you are waiting for a life update on Mr. Ringer, you will have to wait for another post.

While this title might seem a little misleading, it totally is. I have run however, over 1000 hands at 400nl at 45ptbb/100. That’s a damn good feeling. I’ve had guys just spewing money to me, as well as getting into a few nice situations. Its a nice little 1000 hands i’ll tell you what, and i’ve already made my month’s salary in those 1000 hands. No big deal haha.

I’ve also been running far below expection at 200nl. I have just hit a few really gross spots recently. I will take the time to post a few of these hands. I have played over 20k hands in the last week, which has been great. I have pretty much enjoyed it all, minus the shitty coolers and beats…

Oh Come on after a min-3b pre- you show up with this? wtf.

This was the last hand of a shitty-ass session. I actually should really find a fold pre- since my villian’s ranges completely dominate my QKs. I tiltingly call as there’s big pot possibilities and the 3b is too small, and i get myself into trouble on the flop. I also learn something fun about my friend imawhale here.

Anyways, Hope you guys have a good one. I’m still grinding my face off over here, trying to get rich. Also i’d like to note i was reading some old school posts on FTP 200nl game with Narena running a disgusting 10bb/100 over 150k hands. I wish that game was still that easy. I would be a rich man. Later Guys.
